Standardization is a prerequisite for automation. The print industry started standardizing the use of PDFs as early as 1999. Today, a whole range of ISO standards, such as PDF/X, PDF/VT, PDF/A, PDF/R, Print Product Metadata, and Processing Steps, exist and are in active use or being adopted. Other standardization organizations, such as the Ghent Workgroup (GWG), built on those standards to introduce market-segment-specific standards.
