MadeForLayers MadeForLayers

axaio MadeForLayers is a plug-in for InDesign and Illustrator that helps streamlining and simplifying the creation and editing of complex documents; it saves design time and reduces human errors while working with layer-heavy documents. Different layers can be combined into layer views, showing different language or regional variants of a document with a single mouse-click. In packaging environments you can clearly differ between multiple technical versions with one hand grab.

Product information

When combined with axaio MadeToPrint – the intelligent output automation solution – the different layer views can automatically be printed or exported to PDF, instantly creating output for all different language or regional versions without any chance of mistakes.

Fields of application

For multilingual production

Use layer views to organize your multilingual documents. By grouping all layers for a specific language into a layer view, switching between layers literally takes only one click, hugely reducing the chance on error and minimizing confusion while editing. With the output finesse of axaio MadeToPrint you can then easily create either one master PDF file containing all language variants, or one PDF file for each language.

For regional publications

In region-specific publications such as sales brochures, catalogues, etc. parts of the content are typically customized for different regions or target groups. Creating layer views with axaio MadeForLayers allows organizing these different regional editions. This can be done for existing documents or a template can be created to streamline editing of all future production. Again, in combination with axaio MadeToPrint you can easily save separate files for each regional edition afterwards.

For packaging service providers

In a typical packaging workflow many stakeholders must review, comment and approve different versions of a design. Generating and keeping track of all of these versions can prove to be a logistical nightmare. Organizing the source Illustrator or InDesign document with the proper technical, marketing and legal layer views makes it easy to generate a single PDF file with axaio MadeToPrint and allows everyone to see just the information they need.

Benefits

  • Quicker document editing with layer views
Simply define logical layer views for your document once and then switch between layer views while editing with one mouse-click.
  • Standardized document creation processing
Save layer views – containing layer names and metadata definitions – and apply them to new or existing documents to standardize how documents are structured and to enable automation in production.
  • Error-free, consistent output
In combination with axaio MadeToPrint, output all different versions of a publication in one go, with standardized settings and without risk of mixing up or forgetting content in complex documents.
  • Focus
Focus on particular parts of your job.
  • Open for everyone
Even though the single-click layer view switching will not be available on workstations without MadeForLayers, MadeForLayers uses only standard InDesign functionality. Files created or edited with MadeForLayers are perfectly usable on other workstations.

How to upload large files to support?

Background

When sending problems to support or asking questions about a specific functionality, it is always helpful if you supply as much information as possible:

  • Profiles or Process Plans when working with pdfToolbox or pdfaPilot
  • Example documents 'before' and 'after' to explain the problem or question
  • Screenshots explaining the specific problem

When such files are over 2MB it is more reliable and quicker to send them to us through FTP. This article describes how to do so.

 Instructions

  1. First of all, please give your documents a unique name. If you already have a case ID (a 5-digit number), please include this case ID in the name of the file(s) you are going to send to us.
  2. Use FTP software to connect to the following FTP server
    • Server: ftp.fourpees.com
    • User name: supportftp
    • Password: support
  3. Upload your file(s) to the root folder (the location you arrive in when you log-on to the above server).

This FTP server is configured in such a way that you will be able to upload files to it, but you will not be able to delete files from it. We will remove files from the folder as soon as we see they are there.

Using MadeForLayers Layer Views in MadeToPrint

MadeToPrint has the capability to use layer views from MadeForLayers for printing and the export to various file formats (PDF, EPS and various image file formats).

Layer Views in MadeForLayers

Layer Views in MadeForLayers with multi-lingual or regional variants of a publication (see tutorial Language layers in MadeForLayers).

Add a new MadeToPrint Setting

In this example a MadeToPrint job is created, and the layer views are exported to a PDF/X-4 file.

Printer Settings

Under Printer (1) you can select the destination file (PDF). The PDF default settings are opened by clicking the Setup... button (2).

In this example, the default PDF/X-4:2008 (3) is used since it supports PDF/X as well as layers.

Layer Settings

Under Layers you will find two options that allow you to open the layer views from MadeForLayers.

Two modes are listed at the bottom: Print default layer view and Print all layer views separately.

  • Selecting the option  Print default layer view (1) applies the default view (which you may have defined yourself) to the PDF file.
  • The option Print all layer views separately (2) causes all layer views that were created in the original document to be included in the export.

Finally, the selection is  saved (3).

Using MadeToPrint Setting

In the  start window of MadeToPrint, you can then select and use the new setting by pressing the  Print button.

Language layers in MadeForLayers

With MadeForLayers for InDesign & Illustrator you can organize layers in so-called Layer Views. That gives you the chance for easy and reliable switching between different layout views, e.g. with  multi-lingual or regional variants of a publication.

Multilingual publications

Multilingual layouts in InDesign and Illustrator often contain various layers. It's not always easy to keep all belonging layers together.

For better overview  you now can set up  Layer Views with MadeForLayers. It's best for having multiple layer combinations for different layout views.

Open MadeForLayers

Open MadeForLayers via InDesign / Illustrator menu: Plug-Ins; MadeForLayers.

MadeForLayers-Window

MadeForLayers displays all layers contained in the current document.

Visible layers are marked with the eye-symbol, just like in InDesign/Illustrator. The visibility of the layers synchronizes with the document, of course.
The upper part  for the Layer Views is empty, because there haven't been Layer Views created yet.

Configuring a new layer view using the "Extended Dialog"

Change to Extended Dialog in order to create new layer views.

Adding a new Layer View

You can add a new layer view by clicking on the button with the green plus symbol in the upper section of the layer management window.

A new layer view contains all layers specified as visible in Layers section below.

Assigning a name for the Layer View

In the dialog, type a name for the layer view an click OK.

Main window shows new Layer View

In the upper section the new Layer View is visible now. Automatically it gets the value"Default" (as standard layer view).

Adding Layer Views for additional languages

You can use the same procedure to create layer views for additional languages.

To change layer views you simply click the button next to the requested layer view.

You can use axaio MadeToPrint to export PDF files that contain all layer views predesigned in MadeForLayers.

Layer Views in Packaging

With MadeForLayers for InDesign and Illustrator, you can organize layers in so-called  Layer Views. That gives you the chance for easy and reliable switching between different layout views, e.g. with   packaging designs.

Example: Illustrator file of a folded box

Packaging layouts often contain various layers. It's not always easy to keep all belonging layers together.

For  better overview you now can set up  Layer Views with MadeForLayers. They contain layer combinations  for different layout views.

Open MadeForLayers

Open MadeForLayers via Illustrator menu: View; MadeForLayers.

MadeForLayers-Window

MadeForLayers displays all layers contained in the current document.

Visible layers are marked with the eye-symbol, just like in Illustrator. The visibility of the layers synchronizes with the document.

The upper section  for the Layer Views  is empty, because there haven't been Layer Views created yet.

Layer View "Design" in the main Window

In the upper section the new Layer View "Design" is visible now. Automatically it gets the value "Default" (as standard layer view).

Adding more Layer Views

You can use the same procedure to create layer views for measure and varnish/emboss.

Using Layer Views

To change layer views you simply click the button next to the requested layer view.

With MadeToPrint you can print layouts or export PDF files using specific layer views predesigned in MadeForLayers.
