Tutorial - Inspection of a folding carton job

ArtProof performs a pixel-based comparison between two digital files. It supports PDF, AI, TIFF, BMP and JPEG. It quickly detects and identifies missing text, graphics, incorrect fonts and text sizes, as well as broken type and color deviations.

In this tutorial I inspect a folding carton job to find differences between the original and production PDF file.

Launch ArtProof

Choose the setup

1. Go to "File Menu".
2. Click "Setups".
3. Select "Digital".

Load the master PDF file "Carton job_Master.pdf"

1. Double click on the Master panel to launch the file load dialog box and navigate to the folder where the master PDF file "Carton job_Master.pdf" is located.

The master PDF file is the original file.

Prepare the master PDF file for inspection in the PDF Viewer

1. Click right on the layer "Die line".
2. Select "Use for Shape Extraction".
3. Click "Accept Changes".

The shape of the artwork is extract from the background to inspect artwork only. The PDF file itself is not changed.

Load the sample PDF file "Carton job_Sample.pdf"

1. Double click on the Sample panel to launch the file load dialog box and navigate to the folder where the sample PDF file "Carton job_Sample.pdf" is located.

The sample PDF file is the production file.

Prepare the sample PDF file for inspection in the PDF Viewer

1. Click right on the layer "Die line".
2. Select "Use for Shape Extraction".
3. Click "Accept Changes".

The shape is extract from the background to inspect artwork only. The PDF file itself is not changed.

Inspect the master and sample PDF file

1. Click "Run Inspection".

Analyze the inspection results

The differences are auto-detected, highlighted and numbered.

Review the first difference

1. Select the first difference.
2. In the Level drop down list choose "Critical".
3. In the Comment drop down list choose "Text".
4. Click "Include".

Review the second difference

The difference with the chosen level and comment is added in the report. The second difference is automatic detected.

1. Click "Exclude".

Review the remaining differences

The selected difference is excluded from the report. The third difference is automatic detected.

1. Review the third and next differences in the list as described in the previous steps.

Open the Report dialog

1. Click "Generate Report".

Generate the report

1. Enter the product ID "1".
2. In the Status drop down list choose "Fail".
3. Enter the product name "Carton job".
4. Enter lot "1".
5. Enter your name.
6. Enter the comment "Check the differences!".
7. Click "Save".

NOTE: I put the status on "Fail" because several differences are found during the inspection.

Save the report

1. Save the report as "Carton job_Report".
2. Click "Save".

Analyse the report

The inspection results are included in the report. The report has an overview preview of the inspected area, an inspection summary list, a detail preview of each difference with the added level and/or comment and the settings of the selected setup. Excluded differences are not in the report. This PDF report has to be send to the person who is responsible for the corrections.
