License Server

callas License Server introduceert een dynamische manier om callas oplossingen te callas License Server biedt een dynamische manier om callas-oplossingen te licenseren, zoals pdfToolbox, pdfaPilot en pdfChip. In plaats van gebonden te zijn aan een specifieke (fysieke of virtuele) computer, verkrijgen deze tools via de License Server toestemming om taken uit te voeren. Dit maakt callas-oplossingen perfect inzetbaar in Docker-omgevingen en auto-scaling setups, en biedt daarmee aanzienlijk meer flexibiliteit dan traditionele computergebaseerde activatie.

License Server introduces a more dynamic way of licensing processing capacity based on peak performance. License Server-based licensing will allow callas products to run without being activated locally, rather checking with the License Server whether any licenses are available. This allows (virtual) machines to be brought online without having to go through the manual activation process.

The License Server makes models such as ‘load on demand’ or ‘capacity on demand’ possible. You either buy process cartridges and/or credit cartridges that are loaded in the License Server. One Process Cartridge enables you to run one callas process, processing one file at a time. Consequently, eight Process Cartridges will enable you to run 8 processes in parallel, no matter whether this is on one or more (virtual) machines. Process Cartridges would typically be used to run the daily production. To cater for peak production, the Credit Cartridges provide access to processing time, regardless of the number of parallel processes and/or (virtual) machines. For instance, a 50 000 Credit Cartridge handles 50 000 seconds of processing time. In an auto-scalable environment, this would allow for an unlimited number of server instances to be fired up, processing files until all credits are used, providing you access to unprecedented PDF processing power. For pure pay-per-use cases, you could of course choose to just use Credit Cartridges.

This type of licensing is initially compatible with pdfToolbox only. That’s why there are five licenses of pdfToolbox Desktop included with the purchase of License Server. This will be extended to other callas products later.

Daarnaast ondersteunt License Server verwerkingscapaciteit op basis van piekprestaties. Omdat License Server zowel proces cartridges (die licenties uitgeven op basis van een maximum aantal parallelle processen) als credit cartridges (die verwerkingstijd-gebaseerde licenties ondersteunen), kan gebruiken, is het ideaal voor omgevingen met wisselende verwerkingspieken.

Geen lokale activering meer nodig

Wanneer de License Server wordt gebruikt, hoeven callas-producten zoals pdfToolbox, pdfaPilot of pdfChip niet langer lokaal geactiveerd te worden. Ze maken simpelweg verbinding met de License Server en ontvangen daar toestemming om hun taken te verwerken.

Dit betekent dat callas-producten zonder problemen kunnen worden ingezet in Docker-omgevingen, serverloze platforms zoals Amazon Lambda, of auto-scaling omgevingen waar resources on-demand beschikbaar zijn. De enige vereiste is dat de producten toegang hebben tot de License Server.

Flexibele licentie-opties met Proces- en Creditcartridges

De License Server biedt twee soorten cartridges die inspelen op verschillende bedrijfsbehoeften. Proces cartridges stellen een maximum aantal parallelle processen in, zodat een vast aantal taken tegelijkertijd verwerkt kan worden wat het ideaal maakt voor voorspelbare werklasten. Credit cartridges bieden verwerkingstijd-gebaseerde licenties die tijd aftrekken per taak, zonder beperkingen op het aantal parallelle processen.

In stabiele omgevingen zijn procescartridges de meest economische oplossing. In omgevingen met onvoorspelbare verwerkingspieken bieden creditcartridges juist meer flexibiliteit.

Beide opties kunnen gecombineerd worden om een optimale balans te vinden, waarbij procescartridges de basisverwerkingsbelasting afhandelen en creditcartridges ingezet worden voor incidentele pieken.

Traditionele activeringsmethoden kunnen storingsgevoelig zijn, omdat licenties gebonden zijn aan specifieke machines en handmatige aanpassing vereisen. Dit kan problematisch zijn bij een systeemuitval. De License Server elimineert dit single point of failure door callas-oplossingen op elke machine te laten draaien, mits er verbinding is met de License Server.

In de cloud is de License Server gehost op een robuust Amazon AWS-platform dat continuïteit garandeert. Voor on-premise implementaties kan de License Server in een cluster worden ingezet, zodat storingen bij een machine binnen het cluster worden opgevangen zonder onderbreking van de service.

Voor de desktopproducten van callas, zoals pdfToolbox Desktop en pdfaPilot Desktop, biedt de License Server extra flexibiliteit. Deze producten kunnen hun licenties verkrijgen van de License Server, waardoor handmatige activatie op elke computer overbodig is. Wanneer de desktopproducten worden opgestart, vragen ze toegang bij de License Server. Dit maakt de licentie ‘zwevend’ en stelt een team in staat om dezelfde licentie op meerdere werkplekken te gebruiken, wat zowel de flexibiliteit vergroot als de licentiekosten verlaagt.


Cloud- en On-Premise implementaties

Cloud- en On-Premise implementaties

De callas License Server is beschikbaar als cloudgebaseerde SaaS-oplossing, gehost in een beveiligde Amazon AWS-omgeving. Gebruikers hebben toegang tot een wallet die al hun callas-productlicenties bevat, en de communicatie met de License Server verloopt via deze wallet-ID. Voor bedrijven die een lokale oplossing vereisen, is er ook een on-premise versie van de License Server beschikbaar (tegen een meerprijs), die zowel als standalone als in een gesynchroniseerd cluster kan functioneren.

Houd er rekening mee dat lokale License Servers geactiveerd moeten worden op de machines waarop ze draaien, en hierdoor niet geschikt zijn voor alle omgevingen, zoals Docker.
